Description
Hand colored copper plate engravings on hand made chain laid paper. The paper is from the same mill as the Audubon's Birds of America series and each print has a watermark with  J. Whatman and or Turkey Mill and a date between 1816 and 1864 as we have prints from different editions(the earlier prints tend to be on smaller and darker paper and you can call for more info). Prideaux John Selby lived from 1788 to 1867 and is considered one of the best ever bird artists, together with John James Audubon, his contemporary, and John Gould. Like Gould and Audubon he showed the birds with scientific accuracy in natural settings. Like Audubon, he produced images life sized, though the paper size is of smaller scale. Selby engraved many of the plates for his large folio set himself with William Lizar (engraved first 10 Audubon Birds) engraving the rest. The conditions of the prints vary(most in good condition) and can be seen in the photographs for the most part. Additional information on the prints can be gained by calling or emailing us.
